Larry Nielson the Artist

As Joshua Kors, reporter for The Nation magazine has said, “The creatures of Larry Nielson, unlike their brethren in a museum, are neither shot nor stuffed, but painted on pine slabs with a fine bristled brush.”  And his western heros ride straight out of the wood to capture the viewer’s eyes.

Larry is widely acknowledged as one of Utah’s best wildlife painters.  His feel for the wood tells him what is inside, what he must paint.  His use of weathered barn-wood as his canvas is an inspired choice.  The natural contours of the wood call out to him to interpret their sinuous curves in artists’ colors.

Though trained classically at Utah’s Brigham Young University, Larry has his capricious moments and the “Fat Cat” series of animal art allows him to express another side of his multifaceted personality.

So popular are Larry's paintings and graphics, they have been sold to Johnny Cash, Danny Kaye, Liza Minelli, James Brolin, Bob Eubanks, Jack Haley Jr., Carol Burnett, Red Norvo, Robert Hagel (President of Warner Brothers), Janice Joplin, Peggy Lennon, Andy Williams, members of the singing Osmond Family, Loretta Young, Loraine Day, David Cassidy and The Lennon Sisters, to mention a few.

Larry has said that “painting on pine is like dancing with a partner where you feel there’s a bond between you and the wood, which has a lot of different hues, different configurations, even rusty nails and knot holes.  They add to the spirit I’m trying to express.”
